Freelander 2 – Clutch Replacement
The Freelander 2 is a powerful yet compact 4×4 with great off-road-ability.
This Freelander was booked in for a clutch replacement with dual mass flywheel. If your car is omitting unusual sounds when engaging the clutch, it may be due for replacement which can be confirmed with a diagnostic check by a qualified technician.
The clutch in manual vehicles transfers rotation from the engine driving motor to the transmission and drive wheel, and breaks the connection of power transfer when changing gear. The flywheel maintains the rotating mass to assist the rotation and provide consistent torque, it also provides friction for the friction disc and a ring gear for the starter motor to engage on. The driven friction disc absorbs torque when engaging and disengaging drive and rotates the input shaft in the transmission which creates movement at the wheels. These components are vital to allow the car to change speed and to stop without turning off the engine.
The clutch is subjected to constant friction – drivers in built up areas, or where the clutch must be frequently applied for gear changes can experience greater wear on the clutch and its components, resulting in more frequent clutch replacements. Replacing the clutch can be a complicated and time-consuming job so is best left to experienced technicians at a reputable garage.

How to reduce wear on your clutch:
- Ensure you only apply pressure to the clutch when necessary, and always fully engage the clutch. Avoid keeping the clutch pedal partially pressed down which pushes the pressure pad against the clutch plate creating unnecessary friction and wear on the clutch.
- When parked use the handbrake rather than leaving the car in gear – this will reduce the pressure on your clutch.
- Gear changes should be efficient – if you linger on the clutch for a long time you are increasing the wear on the clutch. Ensure gear changes are quick.
